Countering Anti-Blackness In Asian Communities

A Better Force and Asian Family Support Services of Austin are so excited to collaborate once again to host a free workshop on Countering Anti-Blackness in Asian Communities for #BlackHistoryMonth ❤️🐲🖤🐱

An essential part of both of our work is seeing the root causes of different forms of violence and oppression. That our liberation is bound to each other. As Lilla Watson said, “If you have come here to help me, you are wasting your time. But if you have come because your liberation is bound up with mine, then let us work together.”

The term “model minority” was coined in 1966 by Sociologist William Peterson comparing the successes of Japanese and Black Americans and has been used to reinforce the idea that Asian Americans are “good” hardworking minorities while Black Americans are “lazy” and immoral - that aligning with whiteness is what safety and success look like for our community.

In this workshop, we’ll learn about the history of Asian/Black solidarity and anti-Blackness in Asian communities. We will reflect on how anti-Blackness shows up in our circles and how to overcome fears of speaking out against anti-Blackness. Finally we’ll learn how to unite in community and turn our knowledge into advocacy and action.

Visit the link in @afssaustin ‘s bio to register for the workshop!

When: Feb 28 @3-4:30 PM CT
Where: Virtually, on Zoom
Details: The workshop will not be recorded to respect the space of those who attend, but we will be posting a recap and sharing resources after!

We encourage any allies to come listen and learn, but to please step back and hold space for BIPOC folks in the room. Thank you for doing this work with us – we know we are not alone.
